Stage 2

The years in Stage 2 are known in the Montessori Philosophy as The Age of Imagination.  In these years, the child is introduced to many mind opening topics such as ‘The Coming of the Earth’, ‘The Time Line of Life’ and ‘The Coming of Human Beings’. Through these stories & experiments, the child’s imagination begins to ‘spark’ and the love of learning is ignited.

With the wonderful materials designed by Maria Montessori, each child is able to explore all areas of the Key Learning Areas independently; achieving a strong concrete knowledge which will continue to be developed throughout the rest of his/her journey in the Montessori Environment.

“It is necessary for the teacher to guide the child without letting him/her feel their presence too much, so that he/she may always be ready to supply the desired help, but never be the obstacle between the child and his/her experience.”

In Stage 2 the child begins to feel a sense of ownership of their classroom.  They demonstrate responsible behaviours by keeping their classroom environment neat, tidy and ordered.  Everything has a place on the shelf and the children make sure that the materials are put back where they belong when the children are finished using them.

The child displays independence in the classroom in completing their daily tasks in the Key Learning Areas, researching topics of interest and creating beautiful projects which they present to their peers. They also have a great sense of respect towards each other, their environment and themselves.
